The Howarth Foundation

There have been many significant and positive developments since we met at the John Smith Stadium at our last Business Building Futures (BBF) forum on the 25th April 2019, and The Howarth Foundation is delighted to invite you at our next and very special event on Thursday 25th July, between 4pm and 6pm, in the Peter Lorimer Suite, East Stand, Leeds United Football Club, Leeds LS11 OES.

Not only will we highlight the collaborative progress of local businesses, Leeds United Football Club and Leeds City Council in supporting the homeless back into employment but we will introduce you to some absolutely amazing people whose stories will shock, motivate and inspire you to become part of our ‘Street 2 Feet’ journey.

The Howarth Foundation is very proud of its relationship with the football club and is delighted to announce that the event will be opened by Angus Kinnear, Managing Director of Leeds United FC who will offer an overview of the outstanding work the club is doing by providing meaningful and sustainable support and employment to our previously homeless and recovering addicts.

James Rogers of Leeds City Council (Director of Communities and Environments) and chair of Safer Leeds Partnership, will talk briefly about the true picture of homelessness in the city, the challenges associated with rough sleeping and problems of street begging; and outline what the Council, in partnership with others, is doing to support services and local charities at the ‘sharp end’.

Our very own Natalie Wells, Client Development Manager, will introduce ‘G’, who has been employed by Leeds United FC for the last ten months following the club’s commitment to our BBF initiative. ‘G’ will talk openly about his years of addiction from being a ten year old growing up in the city, his near death experience and his pathway to recovery following an attempt on his life by the very drug dealers that fuelled his habit and, how Leeds United FC has changed his life. ‘G’ is living testament that our BBF ‘Street 2 Feet’ programme really does work.

Natalie will update you on THF’s successes and failures, the work undertaken over the last few months and how we have played a part in bringing charities and businesses together plus our role in the Recovery initiative detailed in the Leeds City Council Homeless Strategy.

July is a very exciting and important month for The Howarth Foundation and Nat will proudly introduce you to the latest member of our team, Chris Sylvester, himself a recovering addict and previously homeless career criminal who will join THF on the 1st July. Chris will present an overview of his life as an addict and how, through support from St. Georges Crypt and local businesses, he has turned his life around to secure his dream job as Business and Client Coordinator with The Howarth Foundation.

Last and certainly by no means least, is our very special guest and ambassador, none other than Noel Whelan, Leeds United legend, BBC Radio Leeds host, presenter and commentator (Get in!). Revered by thousands of Leeds United fans around the world, Noel will talk openly about the pressures he faced as a professional footballer at the top of his game and how he conquered his own demons and addiction through a very dark and lonely period of his life.

Our CEO, Andy Howarth will throw the floor open to a question and answer session and will close the event by advising you how you can become part of this incredible family journey from ‘Street 2 Feet’ through our BBF initiative.

Buffet provided.

We are a self- funding charity and this prestigious event is free to our Business Building Futures members but we would ask for a donation of £10 per head cover charge to non-members as a contribution and in the hope that we can deter the ‘no show’ element. At our last seminar, our charity suffered a loss of £65 catering fee as a result of people booking places and failing to attend or give notice of non-attendance. This is a significant amount of money to us and could have provided travelling costs in the first month of employment for one of our clients.
